What is ProChapina?

PROChapina is a non-profit organization in Guatemala that empowers women through work experience and practical skills. In partnership with the University of Wisconsin Whitewater and other companies committed to social impact, we help women build sustainable businesses and improve their quality of life.
Our projects include: artisanal soap making, worrydolls, tote bags, fine jewelry, cushions, table centerpieces, as well as support in health, construction, education, and the creation of new, sustainable lifestyles.
How do we do this ▼
We achieve our mission through hands-on training, strategic partnerships, and community-based programs.
-
Skill-Building Workshops: We offer practical, creative workshops that teach women how to produce marketable goods like soaps, tote bags, fine jewelry, and more.
-
Business Mentorship: We guide participants in turning their skills into sustainable small businesses.
-
Alliances for Impact: With support from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater and other partner organizations, we expand access to resources in education, health, and construction.
-
Community Empowerment: Our holistic approach supports women and their families in building new, dignified lifestyles rooted in opportunity and self-reliance.
History
PROChapina was born from a deep love for Guatemala and a strong desire to create meaningful, lasting change. In many rural and underserved communities across the country, women face daily challenges—poverty, limited education, single motherhood, and a lack of access to stable jobs or health care.
Seeing this reality up close inspired a small group of local leaders, educators, and international allies to take action. What began as simple workshops teaching women to make traditional crafts quickly evolved into a larger vision: empowering women not just to survive, but to thrive.
The name “PROChapina” comes from the word Chapina, a proud term used to describe Guatemalan women—strong, resourceful, and full of potential. We exist to support that spirit.
Through our partnership with the University of Wisconsin Whitewater and various socially responsible companies, PROChapina began offering not only training in crafts like soap making, jewelry, tote bags, and textiles, but also support in areas such as health, education, housing, and entrepreneurship.
Together, Guatemala and PROChapina walk hand in hand—one providing the heart, the other the tools—to create a future where women lead their families and communities toward prosperity, stability, and hope.
